A Roanoke, Virginia Adventure Engagement Session at McAfee Knob
Late Friday night I got an email that the vendor resource guide Shenandoah Valley Bride had listed me as one of their Top Adventure Wedding Photographers in the Shenandoah Valley to follow in 2018! Although the listing is simply a resource for adventurous couples, my goal is to be the go-to adventure photographer for the Shenandoah Valley and West Virginia. I want to bring you the best adventure session experience possible.
Toward that end, I’m putting together my own guide of my en favorite places for an adventure in the Shenandoah Valley. Eventually I’ll have one for West Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Ohio too. Have any suggestions I should check out? I’d love to hear them in the comments below!
Adventure Engagement at McAfee Knob
Speaking of adventure sessions in the Shenandoah Valley, this adventure engagement session took place at McAfee Knob just outside Roanoke.
I don’t normally bring my dogs on sessions, but due to some last minute weather-related location changes, my oldest goldendoodle, Leo, couldn’t be left in the care of others and got to come. (I don’t normally change locations, even for weather reasons, but when officials close access points due to ice, well, you gotta adjust.) . Fortunately, Jamie and Josh are an incredibly easy-going couple and Leo is at the stage of life where he is just as happy to sit around as hike (he’s 9), so it worked out except for a few frames that he photobombed 😂.
McAfee Knob is about an eight-mile hike – four up, four back – but the grade is easy and is accessible for almost anyone with a moderate level of fitness. Due to that – and the fact that it’s on the Appalachian Trail with a spectacular 270 degree view of the surrounding valley and mountains – it’s a popular destination. Therefore, this is a hike I would normally recommend for a sunrise or weekday to avoid the crowds, especially during the summer. It’s also possible to camp at the top, so if you wanted to get the full McAfee Knob experience at sunrise and sunset, that’s an option too.
If you have any questions about how to plan for an adventure session, I’m always accessible by email, or you can check out this blog post, that goes over some of my favorite tips.
